Some of these challenges have been modified from their original challenge to work within the Bingo game format. Others are exactly as they were given in Voiceteam. If you see a challenge that you don't believe will work with the Bingo format, please leave a comment letting me know. Same thing if you have a question about any challenge.
UNIVERSAL BONUSWant to swap a square for something else? Create a fanwork that meets the requirements of VT2021 Universal Bonus, create a fanwork that centers one or more characters who are Black, Indigenous, and/or people of color. Then you earn a swap. Pick one of your squares and trade it for any other challenge on the prompt list.
LIFE OF THE PARTY
Record an audio fanwork for a live audience (virtually or in person). Feel free to encourage them to react verbally, and to include their reactions in the finished/posted audio! Please note that audiencing only counts as a for a filled square if it is audible in the finished product.
FILL YOUR INBOX
Leave a comment for any audio fanwork by another Voiceteam Bingo player.
IN THEIR SHOES
Record something featuring a favourite thing (ship, character, trope, audio format, story element) another Voiceteam Bingo player. The team member in question may *not* contribute to this work for points.
BRING YOUR WORK TO FANDOM DAY
Use a skill from your job, your school, or a non-podfic-related hobby to create something connected to any audio fanwork you have made or listened to. This can take any form! It could be making a physical object, composing a song, drafting a lesson plan, writing a five-paragraph essay, coding a program etc. Whatever you can think of that connects to the audio fanwork.
AUDIO GARDEN
Create an audio fanwork using any of the
podFIDIC seed scripts as your starting place. You can find more context about what to do with them
here.
SYNESTHESIA
Create visual art of what someone's podfic performance looks like. Can range from abstract colors to a specific phrase or parts of the story. Any visual art medium counts: drawing, painting, digital art, mood board, clay, knitting, etc!
JINX!
Two or more Voiceteam Bingo players choose a sound effect (a pre-recorded sound file) and each create audio fanworks that include that sound file somewhere within the work.
DOCUMENT IT
Create, or make significant revisions to, an audio-fanwork-related page on Fanlore! Maybe details about an event, or podfic practices, or anything else. Or create a tutorial/instructions/advice post on how to do something that’s audio-fanwork-related.
COVER ART FIRST
A player creates cover art, and then one or more other players creates an audio fanwork inspired by the cover. One possibility would be going to find a fic that matches the cover image and then recording podfic of it. Or one or more players could write a fic based on the cover and one or more players record it. Or players could create an oral not!fic or filk or audio meta to match the cover. For any of these latter options, the cover art could include a title and the other players make the story match that title, or the cover could start with just art and the title could be added later.
IS THIS A MEME?
Create a meme! Use any existing meme template to make a meme about podfic/filk/oral not!fic, etc, or creating a new meme template that is audio-fanwork-based (like podfic platypus).
TAG TEAM
Edit a teammate’s audio fanwork. (This audio does NOT need to be newly recorded for Voiceteam!)
IF YOU BUILD IT
Plan an audio-based or audio-inclusive event that doesn’t yet exist but should totally exist. It could be realistic or totally fanciful—this is a hypothetical plan and there’s no requirement to actually put it into action. This plan can take whatever form you choose—could just be vague notes, an audio brainstorming session, mocking up graphics/Rules/FAQ/etc for the event, etc.
CAST ON
Create a podcast episode with at least one other Voiceteam player on whatever you want. Meta? Read favourite bits of your own works or works you’ve podficced? Interview a team member about something they have created? Discuss creative process? If you make multiple episodes in a podcast series, each one counts for points!
I SEE YOU
Leave a comment on an audio fan work with zero comments.
MAKE A MULTIVOICE
Make a multivoice fanwork (podfic or oralnot!fic) with multiple Voiceteam Bingo players.
SIMULPOD A FIC
Simultaneously release multiple podfics of the same story with one or more team members.
ROPE THEM IN
Get a non-podficcer friend or family member to create a podfic (definition for non-podficcer is anyone who does not self-identify as a podficcer)
WISH FULFILLMENT
Choose a podfic created by yourself or another Voiceteam Bingo player. Using one of your real-life skills or hobbies, create an object you WISH you could give to one of the characters in the podfic. For example, create a “HOW TO TELL IF SOMEBODY LIKES YOU BACK” lesson plan or PowerPoint, bake the character “I'm sorry you got stuck in a cabin with your nemesis and there was only one bed” cookies, write or perform a song for the character to cheer them up, sew a tiny outfit for the character's pet kitten. Or something else!
REPLICATION
Choose a podfic you or a team member created. Using one of your real-life skills or hobbies, create an object that was featured in the podfic. For example, cook a meal eaten in the fic, knit an object from the fic, plant a section of garden to match one in the fic. Bonus points if it connects to a podfic created this week.
ANTHOLOGY
Pick a theme - it can be as abstract or as concrete as you want - and have multiple team members create a podfic that connects to the theme.
COMMENT WITH A SONG
Comment on a Voiceteam player's podfic, sharing at the end of the comment a song that the podficcer's performance made you think of (and a little bit about why).
MAKE A FILK
Record a filk (points for each team member who contributes, including writing, voice, instrumentation, editing, cover art, etc)
PODFIC BUT MAKE IT ABOUT MUSICALS
Create a podfic for a fandom that's a musical (includes Disney musicals, TV musicals, theatre musicals, anything where characters sing - if a show only has one musical episode (ex// Buffy) the podfic has to connect to that episode)
TIE IT UP WITH A SONG
With at least one other Voiceteam Bingo player, choose a song. Create an anthology of podfics where each podfic incorporates the song in some way
PODFIC + MAKING MUSIC = LOVE
Create a podfic that includes a Voiceteam Bingo player singing or playing an instrument (instruments can be as simple as "kazoo" or "rubber band guitar")*
CREATE A FANMIX
Create a fanmix for a Voiceteam player's podfic
START OF SOMETHING NEW
Create a podfic that includes pre-recorded music in a way you haven't before (intro, outro, scene breaks, under a scene, etc. If you've done all of these, can you think of a creative way to edit in music that you haven't?)
CHARACTER COVER
Perform a song in-character as a character from a podfic you have created or listened to. When you turn it in, explain who the character is, what podfic it's from, and why they are singing this song.
NOT-FIC A SONG
Chose a song and listen to it together as a group, then make an oral!notfic connecting it to a fandom
SNAPSHOT
Take a photo of yourself, with others as needed, recreating a moment from a podfic. Costume and/or masks are fine (but not required). Digitally altering the photo after you take it is also fine (but also not required)!
AUDIO MUSE
Create something while listening to a podfic (painting, sculpture, dance, a meal, etc.) Let the podfic impact what you create. Take a photo of your creation and share it with the podfic’s creator. Bonus points if you turn that photo into a cover that you offer to the podfic’s creator.
FIRST!
Create a podfic in a fandom that doesn’t have any podfics on AO3.
WEIRD SCIENCE
Incorporate one or more clips from another Voiceteam player’s audio fanwork (posted on AO3 or submitted for Voiceteam points) into a fanwork of your own.
HOUSEWARMING
Find a podficcer with fewer than 5 podfics posted to AO3. Encourage them on their podfic adventure by leaving a comment on one of their podfics!
ROPE THEM IN 2 (NON-HUMAN EDITION)
Incorporate a non-human voice into one of your podfics. This could be birdsong, a pet’s voice, or computer-generated speech. This should be a NEW sound that you have recorded/created for the challenge, not a pre-made sound effect you found elsewhere.
PODVID
Create podfic with a video component. For example, you might film yourself reading aloud, you might choose (or draw, or animate!) some images to put on the screen that fit with the story, you might include video clips (either found or made) under your voice, or anything else your creative brains dream up!
PITCH N’ POD
Introduce Voiceteam players to a fandom they didn't know before and have them record a group podfic in the new fandom.
NEVER HAVE I EVER… UNTIL NOW
Play podfic-themed Never Have I Ever with one or more of your team members. Then create an audio fanwork that does one of the things from the game you had never done before. Multiple people can contribute to the same audio work if they are all doing something they have never done before.
SWAP
Find another Voiceteam player who has a different process from yours. Learn about each other's process. You’ll take something from each other’s process that you haven't ever done before (e.g. a new recording trick, a new audio editing program, a new filter or effect.) and use it in the creation of a new podfic each.
DAY IN THE LIFE
Create at least 30 seconds of audio and/or video in-character as a character from a podfic. (Bonus points if it's a podfic posted for Voiceteam.) Can be either improvised or pre-scripted, can include additional sound effects or not. For an example, see https://archiveofourown.org/works/24171868/
TO INFINITY AND BEYOND
Make plans with one or more other Voiceteam players to work on an audio project together after the end of the event. This could be a multivoice podfic, watching a movie together and then not!ficcing it, guesting on their podcast, joining a shared reading of their screenplay, etc. If you’re not sure if it counts, ask us. Once you’ve ironed out the details of your plans, come tell us about them!
POST-CANON
Create an audio work that takes place post-canon for any fandom.
COMMENTARY
Write or record new commentary on an old fanwork of yours. This should be at minimum 7 min or 1K written words. You might talk about why the project is meaningful to you, what your thought process was in making it, what it taught you, etc. This may be solo or take the form of an interview with one or more other Voiceteam players. Bonus points for adding the commentary to the post of the original work.
PODFIC BROKEN TELEPHONE
Plan and begin a game of Podfic Broken Telephone with at least 5 team members. To earn the points, you only need to plan the order of participation, create the first fanwork in the chain, and send it along to the second person in the chain. (See this
Google Doc to learn how Podfic Broken Telephone has been organized in the past. Feel free to tweak the format to fit your own team’s wishes. For example, you might choose to tweak it to Audio Fanwork Broken Telephone, which your group opens up to any fanworks with an audio component!)
MY TURN
Repod something recorded for an earlier Voiceteam event by any player (or something recorded earlier in this event).
DREAM BIG
Begin a long-for-you podfic that you won't be able to finish by the end of the event.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Record the sequel (or *create* a sequel) to any audio fanwork you have created or loved in the past.
TIME WARP
Record an audio fanwork in a fandom you used to be in but haven't created/consumed fanworks for in at least one year. Multiple people may get credit for this, but only if each one hasn't created/consumed fanworks in that fandom for over one year.
GO FOR IT
Finish or make significant progress on an old or aspirational project. This could be a WIP you’ve been working on, something you’ve been stuck on, or an idea you’ve had but haven’t acted on yet. It’s up to you what counts as significant progress, but a good guideline would be completing at least the first part/chapter/1 or 2 hours of work/20 minutes of audio.
MIRROR IMAGE: Think of a character you have something in common with. Create an audio fanwork of the character showing that trait (or those traits!) This could be a podfic of a written fic where the character is showing a trait that overlaps with you, or it could be an oral not!fic you create. It can also be a multivoice involving multiple players voicing characters they have something in common with in the same fanwork.
WAVELENGTH: Create an audio fanwork that feels very *you*: maybe it centers on a favorite trope, character, fandom, performance style, etc. Share it with someone and explain why you chose it.
NO MAKE-UP CHALLENGE: Create an audio fanwork that is not edited—leave in your mistakes! Share it with at *least* one other person.
INSPIRED BY: Create a fanwork inspired by an existing audio fanwork. Your fanwork could be audio, visual, a poem, acting out a scene with hand puppets, or whatever you want.
CHANGE YOUR MIND: Create an audio version of a piece of meta that you have engaged with, that taught you something or made you rethink something. Meta is defined on fanlore as “a fan-authored piece of non-fiction writing discussing any aspect of fandom, fanworks, or the source [canon].”
ACCEPT CRITICISM: Create an audio fanwork that feels risky for you in some way, then get feedback from another person that includes at least one area for growth. You can choose to revise or not, and choose to post or not—the challenge is receiving the critique.
FRESH COAT OF PAINT: Redo an old podfic of yours and put a new spin on it. This could be a new technique you have learned for performance or editing, a new interpretation, new knowledge you have gained, or new emotional resonance the story has for you. Or record your own version of a podfic in another Voiceteam player’s back catalogue and put your spin on that!
ROAD LESS TRAVELED: Use AO3’s filter view to look at most popular characters or relationships for a fandom. To do this, go to the AO3 works tag for that fandom (example:
https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Star%20Wars%20Sequel%20Trilogy/works) and select Characters or Relationships in the dropdown menu on the right side of the screen. Then create an audio fanwork in that fandom with a main character or relationship that is not on that list.
TRANSLATION: Translate a story into another language, dialect, or interpretation. Cat meows, interpretive dance, etc are ON limits.
SHOOT WITHOUT A SCRIPT: Make an audio fanwork that isn’t scripted. Oral not!fic, RPG, in-character improv, etc.
PILLAR TO POST-PRODUCTION: Individually or as a group, write a fic and then record it. No minimum length.
SOUNDS LIKE: Create an audio fanwork where a Voiceteam member creates sound effects live rather than finding them online or creating them with filters. This could be made with props or movements during the recording, could be altering the sound of your voice with props, could be separately recording your own sound effects/soundscapes and then editing them into your podfic, could be having a teammate record themselves doing something the character in podfic is doing and then editing that into the podfic, or something else!
PLAYTIME!: Create and playtest a podfic game. Feel free to use this as a starting place: https://podfication.dreamwidth.org/15366.html
CHAOS MISSION: Go to a random word generator, such as
https://randomwordgenerator.com/ or
https://randomwordgenerator.com/noun.php . You may generate up to 5 words. Pick ONE of those words to use for this challenge. This word becomes your chaos mission. Make fanworks that connect to this word.
CLOSET COSPLAY: Coordinate your outfit to a podfic you are creating or listening to. Post a picture of the outfit with a link to the podfic (or to the text you were podficcing). The picture does not need to show your face!
SOUND EFFECT FIRST: Get prompted by another player with a sound effect, and then create an audio fanwork that uses that sound effect. The player who is prompted doesn’t get to help choose the sound effect, but they can decline the prompt and ask for a new one up to 3 times if needed. You’re allowed to use a song or a voice clip (from another audio fanwork, a commercial, etc) as your sound effect.
FATE: Using a random number generator, choose a random page from AO3’s podfic tag and then pick a podfic from it at random. Listen (unless the tags or summary are DNW for you) and leave feedback on what you liked about it!
